Stop The Summer! I Want To Get Off! (and a freebie)

I can't believe it is practically the end of July.  I only have a few weeks before I go back into my classroom to starting setting up.  At least I still have a short trip to Chicago to visit my sister to look forward to before starting back.

Enough complaining about how quickly summer is flying by!  I have a freebie to share with you.   I have a book that I got at the I Teach K! conference many years ago when it was in Chicago.  For each letter of the alphabet there is an animal or object for the students to create that begins with that letter.

This past school year, I had many students who were above level.  So we moved into learning the diagraphs.  I decided to create a printable that they could make for the "ch" diagraph.  I created a "ch" chick for them to make.

A Popsicle Freebie

Happy Summer!  It seems that summer has arrived in southeast Michigan.  We are in for a heat wave this week after a bunch of rainy days.  I love a red popsicle to cool off on a hot day.  So I made a popsicle sight word reader for a student I am tutoring this summer.  I thought I would share it with all of you for a Manic Monday freebie.

My First Manic Monday Freebie of 2013

Happy Monday!

If you read my previous post, you know that I started back to school last Thursday.  Today was our first "real" day back, where we followed a normal schedule.  The kids seemed to be in shock at first, but they were soon back to normal.  I needed something for my measurement center this week.  So I made a center with some of my winter clip art.  I decided that it would be perfect to share with you for Manic Monday.

Tomorrow is my student teacher's first day.  Keep your fingers crossed for me that it goes well.  this is my 2nd time to have a student teacher.  My 1st one was wonderful.  I am hoping this time goes as well.  I will keep you posted on how it goes.

A Manic Monday Freebie

Happy Monday!

I have just begun my 4th week of school today.  I have to say I have one of the best classes ever.  I was sitting at a table today, just watching them.  It was so wonderful.  Everyone was on task doing what I had asked them to do.  There was a hum in the air of little ones hard at work.  I was very impressed.

Because of my good fortune of having such a terrific class this year, I have decided to share the graph I made with my class last week as a freebie.  The students graphed their favorite color.

My FIRST Monday Made It

So, you have found me out.  I'm one of those girls who likes to lurk quietly and watch everyone else.  Then I jump in and try it myself.  That is what happened with Monday Made It.  I have been looking at everyone else's very creative ideas.   Now I'm ready to share one of my own ideas (maybe not quite as creative, but functional).


I made 6 making word folders this weekend.  I'm going to use them with my small group reading groups.  Probably not most of my groups until more towards the middle of the school year.  But I usually have one group of kinders that come to me reading or almost reading.


So here is how I made my folders:


First of all I found some awesome folders at Walmart.  I realize my boys aren't going to want the flower folders but, hopefully I will have at least 2 girls in each of my groups.  I was worried that the folders wouldn't be very sturdy since they were 3 for 88 cents.  But they are great.

I printed out two sheets that I had put letters on and glued them to the inside of the folders.

Here is what it looked like:

Then I used cardstock that I bought at the Dollar Tree.  I can't tell you how much I love this cardstock.  It is plain on one side and has a design on the other side.  It is also pretty thick.  It was 10 sheets for $1.

I printed letters on the cardstock and cut them apart.  I printed the letters on different colored cardstock so that I can tell which letters go with which folders (in case a few get separated from their folder).   I am going to laminate the letters and the file folders.  (I didn't get a chance to run to school to do that.)  After I laminate them, I am going to put velcro on the back of each letter and 2 pieces of velcro under each letter that is one the file folder.  I will also put a piece of velcro in the middle of each box at the bottom where the students can make their words.
